The Fabric Snob – a Canadian Online Fabric Store {+ discount & giveaway!}

I love the Canadian online fabric shopping scene! Over the past few years, it has grown by leaps and bounds, providing Canadian (and US and International!) shoppers with lots of variety and choice.

Today, I’m thrilled to be able to feature Lindsey from The Fabric Snob, chat about her shop and give you a chance to win a fabric-y giveaway! Plus, she’s provided a discount code for you to use in her shop. (P.S. This is the 20th Canadian Online Fabric Store interview we’ve had here!)

“It started with the search for the perfect diaper fabric for my newborn son, which was impossible to find in Canada. I realized there was a huge gap in the Canadian market for on-trend fabrics, so The Fabric Snob was born!

We also have a brick and mortar location. We are located in a small town, Riverton, in rural Manitoba! If you are ever out our way, please stop in for a visit, we would love to have you!” ~ Lindsey, The Fabric Snob

I had a lovely time shopping at The Fabric Snob. They have a huge shop including 60+ solid knit colours plus prints, french terry, and heathered knits, quilting cottons, fleece, minky, flannels, notions and thread! Plus a low Canada and US shipping flat rate of $9.99.

My order arrived super-quick with a washing sheet and bonus fruit snacks that, yes, I did share with my kids! Plus I got a swatch sheet for their huge array of knits – so I can properly match future orders. (Almost my favorite part of the order, besides the fabric of course! #fabricnerd)

Sherri: Why did you decide to start your shop?

Lindsey: I wanted something that I could do from home while being a mom, I LOVED sewing and was a self-professed fabric snob. Plus I have always loved working with technology. An online fabric store was the perfect fit!

Sherri: What is your favorite type of sewing project?

Lindsey: Clothing! I love being able to custom fit something to my body. But I also love the challenge of quilting projects!

Sherri: What is something coming up in the near future that you are especially excited about?

Lindsey: We are hoping to expand our apparel fabrics in a big way over the next few months, and we are also in the process of getting a long-arm to start offering edge-to-edge quilting services!

Sherri: Thanks, Lindsey!

Lucky us! The Fabric Snob is offering a discount at their shop until May 31, 2018! (One-time use, discount is not applicable to EverSewn Sewing Machines.)

Use the code THR10 to get 10% off your order.

Earth Indigo Fabric – a Canadian Online Fabric Store {+ discount & giveaway!}

Good Monday to you! I’m happy to introduce the 19th Canadian Online Fabric Store in this series to you today! Monica from Earth Indigo will be joining us for an interview, a little bit about her shop and a giveaway & discount for you!

Earth Indigo is not the “typical” quilting cotton online shop I usually interview. I’m excited that they carry handloom and hand printed fabrics from all over the world, batiks, organic cotton and hemp based fabrics, jersey and tencel knits and chambray. When I talked to Monica she mentioned that she loves minimalist draped clothing, so she stocks linens and knits too!

The idea of Earth Indigo was conceived in October 2015 and my etsy store started in January this year, with the online store starting a month later. I was a full time stay at home mom taking care of my twins for 18 months and I started craving something else to focus on in my life. I love fabric, even more than sewing itself. I also started to get into weaving. I can’t help but want to give other weavers in the world a channel to get their crafts out to crafters in this part of the world.” ~ Monica, Earth Indigo

Thread Riding Hood: What was your main goal when starting Earth Indigo?

Monica: I love ethnic fabric and would like to introduce beautifully handcrafted fabric that reflects cultural beauty to the craft community in North America. Also I believe crafters are kind-hearted – that we can contribute to make this world better by using ethical and environmental friendly fabric.

Thread Riding Hood: What is your favorite type of sewing project?

Monica: I like making clothing as well as some other useful gift items, eg. nursing cover, eye pillow, cushion, pouch etc.

Thread Riding Hood: What is something coming up in the near future that you are especially excited about?

Monica: I have some beautiful fair trade handwoven fabric from Guatemala that were woven on backstrap looms coming up soon. I’m also exploring handprinted fabric from China and India that hopefully will see them at the store in the summer.

Thread Riding Hood: Thanks Monica!

Hooray! Earth Indigo is offering a discount at their shop until July 31, 2016!

Use the code TRHCHEERS15 to get 15% off your order.

I’m so excited, Earth Indigo is giving away this gorgeous hand printed batik fabric – one roll each to two lucky winners! It is a fair trade vintage styled batik printed by North Thailand Hmong Hill Tribe artisans on cotton fabric. So pretty! Each winner will get one roll of fabric 12″ wide by 5 1/2 yards. Think of all of the amazing things you could make with that much goodness!

This giveaway is open to everyone world-wide, from today (June 20th) until midnight June 27, 2016 (PST). Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter – and if you don’t have Facebook to sign in with, just use your name and email address. There’s a “click to enter”, no social media login entry too!

Zoey & Bean Fabrics – a Canadian Online Fabric Store {+ discount & giveaway!}

Happy Tuesday! Today I am happy to be interviewing Kristi, owner of Zoey & Bean Fabrics and recent blog sponsor. Amazingly, this is the 18th Canadian Online Fabric Store interview – a great collection of home-grown Canadian shops!

Zoey & Bean Fabrics is offering you a discount and a bundle giveaway today! They are located in Leduc, Alberta and ship to Canada and the US. They opened recently and have a well curated growing selection of fabrics. I can’t wait to see what they order next, they already have a ton of my favorites!

Zoey & Bean opened at the end of January and is continually growing- both with new fabrics and new friends! When I’m not running Zoey & Bean, I am a wife to a nerdy bearded guy, mom to two energetic girls and one lazy bullmastiff, as well as a full time Elementary Special Education Teacher. I sell fabrics I love, I hope you love them too!” ~ Kristi, Zoey & Bean Fabrics

I love that Kristi offers Michael Miller Cotton Couture Solids. They are good solids to use for garments because they drape better than most solids available. I’m going to try them out on a kids’ summer dress soon. She also carries Riley Blake Sashing Stash, which I haven’t seen before – and wouldn’t they look great on the edge of a quilt? Plus, super cute, you can collect “beans” as part of their Rewards Program to earn discounts to the shop!

Thread Riding Hood: Why did you decide to start Zoey & Bean Fabrics?

Kristi: I’ve always loved pretty patterns and cute things. I discovered a few local fabric stores but was constantly disappointed when I could not find fabric that I actually wanted to sew with. I researched starting my own store three separate times over the past 10 years and decided it was finally time to go for it! I now get to find those pretty patterns and cute things and share them with others!

Thread Riding Hood: What is your favorite type of sewing project? Quilting, Apparel… ?

Kristi: I am a brand new quilter and won’t torture you with any pictures of misaligned seams and bunched up backing, but I have so many plans for my next quilts!

Thread Riding Hood: What is something coming up in the near future that you are especially excited about?

Kristi: Zoey & Bean’s very first curated bundle was added to the shop recently. I’m looking forward to creating more and collaborating with others for future bundles! I am also working on building Zoey & Bean’s collection of basic fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics, Lecien and Dear Stella as well as increasing the selection of colours of Michael Miller Cotton Couture.

Thread Riding Hood: Thanks Kristi!

Go ahead and stash up on solids and your favorite blender and sashing prints with this 15% discount!

Use the discount code “TRD15″ to save 15% on your order at Zoey & Bean Fabrics until April 12, 2016!

One lucky reader will get this amazing stash builder when they win this Michael Miller Cotton Couture 9 Fat Quarter Bundle PLUS a $25 store credit! Woot, Woot!

Flare Fabrics – a Canadian Online Fabric Store {+ discount & giveaway!}

Happy Monday! This is the 17th shop I’ve interviewed for our continuing Canadian Online Fabric Store interview series! Today’s feature is Flare Fabrics – Marlene’s shop is “where to go” for batiks and bold contemporary cottons. Plus she stocks lots of other fabrics, yard dyes & linens, tons of notions and bag hardware and patterns. Don’t miss her gorgeous Lecien giveaway bundle, or the month-long discount code at the bottom of this post. (Good until Dec 31!)

** PLUS: Don’t miss out on the Flare Fabrics Cyber Monday Sale – Nov 30th ONLY! Save 22.2% on everything in the shop with code FF2015! **

I started the store with a focus on batiks, a traditional fabric that is handmade in Indonesia. In the last few years as the “modern” quilt movement has grown, I love to mix and match batiks with solids and modern fabrics. It’s an exciting blend of old and new. I’m always on the look out for the unusual – a new fabric artist or a line that people haven’t seen.” ~ Marlene, Flare Fabrics

I was re-introduced to Flare Fabrics when I talked to Marlene this Spring at Creativ Festival. I worked with her Cory Pepper shot cotton in my Indiesew spring collection post. It’s gorgeous cotton and I’m still hoarding my leftovers. Here are a few favorites of mine from the shop – click to find out more! You’ll have to check out the bottom of this post for the most gorgeous Marcia Derse Bookends – she has created really amazing, unique and beautiful fabric.

Thread Riding Hood: Why did you decide to start Flare Fabrics?

Marlene: Like every quilter, I was always looking for that “one” perfect fabric for my current design. Online shopping opened numerous doors, so when I couldn’t find what I wanted in Canada, I kept turning to the U.S. Why not have these fabrics in Canada, I thought? And so Flare Fabrics was born.

My professional career was concentrated in communications. I’ve been a journalist, a photographer, a marketing consultant, a graphic designer, a web developer…to name a few. When I started Flare Fabrics in 2010, I was working full time so an online fabric store was a perfect fit with my skills, interests and availability. Or so I thought. Busy, busy, busy! Last year I left my “regular” job and took the business full time. I’m really enjoying having the time to experiment with the fabric we sell.

Thread Riding Hood: What is your favorite type of sewing project? Quilting, Apparel… ?

Marlene: I’m partial to projects that can be sewn in 2 weekends – or less! I don’t sew anything larger than a decent size lap quilt and I prefer simple patterns where the texture of the fabric shines. That’s one of the many reasons I love batiks. Lately I’ve become enamoured with bags and purses and I have a large extended family so lots of people to sew pouches and totes for 🙂

Thread Riding Hood: What is something coming up in the near future that you are especially excited about?

Marlene: Flare Fabrics is moving!  I have completely outgrown my home space – both the small outside studio in our Toronto backyard and the basement of the house. And so now I can finally combine my love of fabric with my love of the country. Our new home-based studio is rural – outside Perth in Eastern Ontario – and hopefully we won’t outgrow this one too quickly!

Thread Riding Hood: Thanks Marlene! My postage-stamp of a suburbian backyard can’t compete with your new place. Wow! Looks amazing!

Check out this super-generous gorgeous L’s Modern Basic by Lecien 12 Fat Quarter Giveaway! The cool blues and grays are fantastic blenders for your projects, and I think they’d make a fabulous wintery quilt all mixed together!

This giveaway is open to readers in Canada & the US, from today (November 30) until midnight December 7, 2015. Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter – and if you don’t have Facebook to sign in with, just use your name and email address. Funky Monkey Fabrics – a Canadian Online Fabric Store {+ discount & giveaway!}

I’m happy to be able to feature another Canadian Online Fabric Store interview today! Meet Melissa, owner of Funky Monkey Fabrics. Today she’s offering you a discount and a bundle giveaway from her shop! Funky Monkey Fabrics is based out of Ontario, Canada and they ship worldwide. (The giveaway is open internationally as well!)

I started my sewing and embroidery business, Custom Creations, in 2009 while on Maternity leave with my first baby. After a few years of driving to the USA for fabric I opened up my fabric shop in 2013. I started with about 10 bolts of fabric and now have over 2000 products available in my store! It’s been a lot of hard work, but I have the most amazing customers and I get to cut beautiful fabric every day… It doesn’t get much better than this!” ~ Melissa, Funky Monkey Fabrics

I’ve been to Melissa’s shop a few times, but it wasn’t until recently that I realized just how much stock she has. And so varied! Take a look at all the notions she carries… everything you need to make your project – all in one place. Plus, I know a lot of you have kids that love licensed fabrics – she’s got cotton Minions and Disney knits! So good!

Just to show how varied her stock is – here are a few of my favorites. I had a hard time choosing only 6! I guess you’ll have to go and peruse the rest on her website… or, if you’d prefer and live near Varna, Ontario – book a visit to her shop. Melissa has a “by appointment” retail location open pretty much daily during school hours. If you can’t make it there, she is willing to match fabrics and send you a photo so you get exactly what you are expecting!

Thread Riding Hood: Why did you decide to start Funky Monkey Fabrics?

Melissa: I started Funky Monkey Fabrics because I couldn’t find the fabric I was looking for in Canada. There were lots of places to buy in the USA but there was a void here. I wanted to bring the fun, popular, & modern fabrics here at competitive prices so other Canadians didn’t have to worry about duty, exchange, long shipping times etc.

Thread Riding Hood: What is your favorite type of sewing project? Quilting, Apparel… ?

Melissa: I recently started experimenting with knits, so right now I’m having a lot of fun sewing clothes for my kids!

Thread Riding Hood: What is something coming up in the near future that you are especially excited about?

Melissa: My husband is building me floor to ceiling shelving because I have maxed out the space I have. So that means I will have more room for MORE FABRIC! I am continuously bringing in new stock. Recently I have added Double Gauze, Essex Linen, a variety of stabilizers, and a wide range of knits to my store.

Thread Riding Hood: Thanks Melissa!

How would you like the chance to get $50 worth of fabric from Funky Monkey Fabrics?! Melissa is amazing and has offered one lucky reader the chance win just that!

This giveaway is open to everyone, from today (October 8) until midnight October 14, 2015. Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter – and if you don’t have Facebook to sign in with, just use your name and email address. There’s a “click to enter”, no social media login entry too!

Fabric Please! – a Canadian Online Fabric Store {+ discount & giveaway!}

Hello to you! We are back and rested from our vacation so it’s time for another  Canadian Online Fabric Store series interview! I’m so pleased to introduce Rita, owner of online Canadian shop Fabric Please! today. She has a brand new shop with a not-so-new background. You may know Rita better as author of the blog Pin Pricked Fingers.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rita at the Spring Creativ Festival and it was so much fun to chat with her. Today she’s bringing you a discount and a bundle giveaway from her shop. She is based out of Ontario, Canada – and ships worldwide. (The giveaway is open internationally too!)

“I’m married, I have a 13 year old son and we have two of the goofiest Portuguese Water Dogs on the planet! My family keeps me grounded, fulfilled and laughing.  I’ve lived long enough to know it’s more important to enjoy your work so you can enjoy your life.  In a nut shell, that’s why I started Fabric Please!  I started the business in February 2015 and I’m loving every minute of it!” ~ Rita, owner of Fabric Please!

Alright – here are some of my favorites from her shop…. always the hardest and most fun part of these interviews. I get to drool over the whole shop (figuratively of course!) trying to choose which fabrics to feature.

Thread Riding Hood: Why did you decide to start Fabric Please!?

Rita: I’ve been in the alternative health field (registered massage therapist) for 25 years and I’ve been looking for another career that is a bit gentler on my body.  I’ve been a sewist most of my life and have had a love affair with fabric since I can remember.  It just seemed like a natural fit.

Thread Riding Hood: What is your favorite type of sewing project? Quilting, Apparel… ?

Rita: I prefer quilting and home decor projects.  I like the (almost) instant gratification from transforming a space with fabric.  I dabble in apparel but it’s not my forte.

Thread Riding Hood: What is something coming up in the near future that you are especially excited about?

Rita: I’m just so excited about all of it! It’s such a new business, I’m still in the honeymoon faze of it all!  If I had to narrow it down, I’m especially looking forward to the Fall Creativ Festival.  I love the interaction with my customers.  I love working with them to choose the perfect fabric for that special project they are working on or having them find something that sparks a new project idea.

Thread Riding Hood: Thanks Rita!

One lucky reader will win the 9 fat quarter bundle pictured above! This giveaway is is extra fun for me, because I got to choose the bundle Rita is giving away! She offered to let me choose a blogger bundle from her shop just after she opened and we decided to pair it with this interview and giveaway. If you can’t wait to see if you won the bundle, you can also buy them in her shop!

I’m going to use my bundle to make a quilt-as-you go pillow or two. Something like this Maureen Cracknell Diamond Strings quilt I recently saw. I think these colours will be perfect for it! I can even use the yellow and green in the centre to create the middle diamond shape. (edited: I made the pillow!)

This giveaway is open to everyone, from today (June 16th) until midnight June 23, 2015. Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter – and if you don’t have Facebook to sign in with, just use your name and email address. There’s a “click to enter”, no social media login entry too!

We are super lucky because Rita has decided to also offer a discount along with her interview. Use the discount code “THREAD15” to save 15% on your order at Fabric Please! until July 1, 2015!

I couldn’t resist choosing a few more of my favorites. Have fun stashing! (P.S. All Fabric Please! shipping costs are flat rate – Canada $8, US $15, International $30!)
