Sewing Survey Saturday #8

Last Week’s Survey Results:

Last week’s survey asked “When do you primarily buy fabric?”. Over half of you buy it sometimes with a project in mind and sometimes when you see a fabric you like. I was wondering if this would come out as the result, because it seems some fabrics are too pretty to pass up – unless you are one of the very disciplined 12% who only buy fabric (and just enough fabric) for each project. How I envy you and your non-stash. I would have so much more room in my fabric closet for notions if I did that! A big thank-you to Mirjam from Dekawear for last week’s question.

This week I’m hijacking the survey to ask a question of my own. As all of my Facebook friends know by now (hi!), my machine has been down this week – apparently the timing needs fixing. I’ve been using my time to deep-clean my sewing room and office and it has been great. I love how tidy it is and I’ve been able to find a place for everything, which is going to help a lot towards being able to keep it clean in the future! My question for this week is related to your fabric scraps. I found a lot of fabric in small pieces that I don’t want to part with, but my scrap bin is overflowing. Just as with everything in my life, I have a hard time throwing things out! I know that quilters have various ways of dealing with the scraps, sometimes cutting different lengths and sorting them that way. Do any of you have any tips and tricks you use? I’d love to know what you think… the survey is after the photo, and please comment with your own solution, if my options don’t suit you.  (Want your sewing project or blog featured on Sewing Survey Saturday? Sewing Survey Saturday #7

Last Week’s Survey Results:

Last week’s questions asked “Who do you primarily sew for?” An overwhelming 44% of you sew for your kids/nephews/nieces and grandkids. With a not-so-shabby 30% coming in second with “a combination of everyone”. So – now that we know everyone’s priorities I’m sure you can guess mine! I would most definitely fall into the “combination” category. And you can tell from my bloggy wanderings, a little of this, a little of that! Let’s not forget to thank Amy from Friend’s Stitched Together for last week’s question! Thanks Amy!

This week we have a guest question from Mirjam, who writes Dekawear in the Netherlands (province of Zeeland). I’ve really enjoyed following Mirjam along through her blog and am especially grateful for the thoughtful comments she leaves here on Thread Riding Hood! Mirjam sent me three tutorials to choose from and I have had a really hard time deciding which one to feature! I think that most of you (since you sew for kids and grandkids, re: last week’s survey!) will appreciate seeing a unisex project that everyone would love, so I’ve chosen to feature her teddy bears. Can you believe she stitched these out of re-purposed jeans! They are so cute – check out her post to find out where you can get the pattern. I might have to make some for my kids too – everyone loves a cuddly bear, especially when it is handmade! And, because really I couldn’t decide – here are links to her backpack and Ethan shirt as well!  (Want your sewing project or blog featured on Sewing Survey Saturday? It’s easy! Sewing Survey Saturday #6

Last Week’s Survey Results:

I love that there is an amazing story to go along with our survey from last week! But first, the results. We asked “What kind of pincushion do you use?”  Turns out most of you use a magnetic pincushion! I did not know they were that popular, but can relate as that’s what I prefer as well. It’s so nice to be able to throw your pins in the general direction of the magnet and have them stick! A big thanks to my mom for our question last week.

I’d also like to thank Susan Nicol for an interesting story relating to finding things in tomato pincushions! She left a note that connected to a post Louisa from Louisa Quilts wrote over a year ago. She took her mother’s pincushion apart and you’ll never guess how many pins and needles she found! You can read her story here.

Today’s question is brought to you Amy from Friend’s Stitched Together. She has created a very cute tutorial for a Toddler Dinosaur Cape. I love this photo! I can only imagine what is going through his head, is he going to pounce on the tennis ball or not?! You’ll want to pin this one for later – the spikes are cleverly put together – and it’s made of fleece, so it sews up fast! This week’s survey is after the photo, don’t forget to Have YOUR Say! Sewing Survey Saturday #5

Before I get into a long and drawn out explanation of where I have been lately (besides not blogging!) I’ll get on with this post or I’ll be here all night! I’ve been planning and I’m going to start rolling out some great new things for 2014, hold tight!

Two weeks ago our survey asked “Where do you sew?” Turns out we have a very fortunate readership because over 90% of you have your own permanent sewing space. Over 50% of you even get to sew in your very own sewing room! I must say I am jealous of you folks. I am not complaining, because I get the larger portion of a room I share with my husband’s office, but I do really have to try to keep it tidy – which is completely against my nature! Any organizing junkies out there have any tips on how to do that more efficiently? I’d love to know!

This week I’m asking a new question that my mom suggested. It made me think – what if you have questions you’d like to ask too? Maybe you have a sewing related blog and you’d like to have some new visitors? I want to promote some sewing community around here and… (drum roll please! Exciting thing coming up!) I want to hear from you! In return I would love to post your name and where you live (city, province, state…) along with your question, if chosen, on a Saturday post. If you blog, I will also post a link and photo for one of your posts and to your blog in general. All you do is send an email to sherri@threadridinghood.com that includes your sewing related multiple choice question. Please include the question and 3 to 5 multiple choice answers. You can also send me your name and location, and blog info including which post you’d like me to link up to! Please, if you do not blog – don’t hesitate to enter a question. I’d love to hear from you as well, and I will post a photo of one of your recent projects if you want to send it to me with your email.

What does this do for you? We all get to know some new bloggers and see some new projects. I love seeing things others have sewn – that’s one of the reasons we all love to read blogs! So… what are you waiting for?! Email away – after you answer this week’s survey of course! Hee Hee!

This week’s question is… What kind of pincushion do you use? Interestingly, it comes with some background! My mom happened to take apart her old tomato shaped pin cushion and found 18 sewing needles inside! If you are anything like me, those are in short supply – for some reason I am always losing mine. Maybe that’s where they are? Too bad I am so sentimental I can’t tear mine open – it’s been with me for awhile! If you do decide to see what’s in yours it would be fun if you’d comment and let us know what you found. Does yours have more than 18 needles?! And – in the interest of fairness, here is one of my mom’s projects – check out the quilt she hand-quilted in this post!

Sewing Survey Saturday #4

I hope you are having a wonderful restful Saturday and you all enjoyed your Christmas holiday! Today I am writing from South Texas where we are visiting my parents for a two week vacation. The weather here is a tad cold and rainy, which is odd for this area. But we are not complaining – it is NOT snowing or freezing rain. And despite the chilly-ish forecast, we are off to the beach on Monday.

Last week our faithful group of survey answerers let us know that we all sew almost everything! Tied for a close second everyone likes to sew Quilts and Clothing. I have to say that I enjoy everything as well – though I tend to leave quilting at the end of my list. That is slowly changing – as I find quilting and making small projects a lot of fun and will be posting one next week. That’s likely leading to some full size quilts soon (hopefully!)

Ready for this week’s question?

Sewing Survey Saturday #3

Back again! A tad late this week. We had a fun day yesterday with family and the beginnings of an ice storm – which has let to part of our neighbor’s tree lying on our fence this morning. Exciting?!

Last week’s survey asked “Is your holiday sewing finished yet?” Over half of everyone voting are taking all the time they can get. Only 2 people are finished – lucky them! I’m tempted to post the same one this week – just for curiosity’s sake! To see if the ratio of finished projects increases. I’m finished – but I cut way down on the handmade gifting this year. Instead I am concentrating on making a Carry-On and 2 Backpacks for our trip to visit my parents by plane this year. They are in South Texas – which is going to feel so good after our chilly winter weather!

On to this week’s survey – Let’s find out what you like to sew the most. I’d love to be able to tailor posts to reflect what you are interested in! And – THANK YOU for participating – I really enjoying finding out what you think on a weekly basis! As always – if you have more to discuss about the week’s question – leave a comment so we can talk about what you have to say!
