Last Week’s Survey Results:
Last week’s survey asked “When do you primarily buy fabric?”. Over half of you buy it sometimes with a project in mind and sometimes when you see a fabric you like. I was wondering if this would come out as the result, because it seems some fabrics are too pretty to pass up – unless you are one of the very disciplined 12% who only buy fabric (and just enough fabric) for each project. How I envy you and your non-stash. I would have so much more room in my fabric closet for notions if I did that! A big thank-you to Mirjam from Dekawear for last week’s question.
This week I’m hijacking the survey to ask a question of my own. As all of my Facebook friends know by now (hi!), my machine has been down this week – apparently the timing needs fixing. I’ve been using my time to deep-clean my sewing room and office and it has been great. I love how tidy it is and I’ve been able to find a place for everything, which is going to help a lot towards being able to keep it clean in the future! My question for this week is related to your fabric scraps. I found a lot of fabric in small pieces that I don’t want to part with, but my scrap bin is overflowing. Just as with everything in my life, I have a hard time throwing things out! I know that quilters have various ways of dealing with the scraps, sometimes cutting different lengths and sorting them that way. Do any of you have any tips and tricks you use? I’d love to know what you think… the survey is after the photo, and please comment with your own solution, if my options don’t suit you. Hi, regarding your survey: I do ignore them but when my bin begins to overflow I donate the contents to my quilting guild’s charity committee. They put them to good use! Great question! B.
Hi Brenda! Thanks for stopping by. Good idea with the donations. I don’t have a connection to a guild, but I’m sure I could find one around to donate to. Thanks for the suggestion!
Lately I buy (a bit) more fabric than I need for a project, to build up a stash. So the large parts af fabric that are left over, I put in my ‘fabric stash’. Then I have two bags (need to find a more propper solution for this) one with larger scraps and one with tiny scraps. Sometimes I use them for little projects, like a smartphone cover, or so. The very very tiny scraps I put in a little box with my daughters crafting stuff. She uses them to decorate her drawings, or she makes a kind of collage with it :). Also, if you don’t know what to do with your scraps, you can donate them to the kindergarten teacher, or to the childrens daycare. They like to use them in crafting projects for the kids.
And again: thanks for having me in your survey, last week! 🙂
Good idea Mirjam – I like the idea of saving the smaller scraps for the kids… hmmmm…. thinking! 🙂
Good question, i actually sort by color and some by size. i have a big jar for strips and strings, need a bigger one, lol. i have a jar for ‘chips’ (little triangle type pieces) and a bunch of little bins by color (sort of). my stash is still small so nothing is too small to keep. i also have a bag for trimmings, great for stuffing things with. I have a basket by my cutting table and all scraps go in there, until its full then i make myself deal with and sort it properly. when i’m working on a project all those scraps stay together until its done. and if its a long project like BOM and quilt alongs all those fabrics stay together with their scraps too. i can be obsessively organized, lol
Wow Barbe – you are amazing! I think I will start a trimmings bag – that seems like a really great idea for stuffing small things. Maybe I will have to make something to hold them – that sounds like fun! 🙂
